August 2, 2005 - A lot of the players in LA talked about a big problem with streetball out there... and it's related to Hollywood. Everybody tries to be flashy, tries to show off. They also talk endlessly on the court. They worry so much about their yapping and looking pretty that they don't bother working on their actual games. Our players rise above that, and actually have the steak to go with the sizzle. That's why they're in City Slam. They're the best of the best.
And speaking of Hollywood - we were down at the Venice Beach courts, you know, the ones made famous in "White Men Can't Jump," scouting for LA's finest streetball talent. The courts sit right by the seaside, palm trees surrounding the blacktop with California's mountains off in the distance and Venice Beach's signature t-shirt stands just steps away. Only one problem - these courts didn't look like the ones Woody and Wesley hustled their way through. We asked around, and one of the locals let us know the truth - the "White Men Can't Jump" court is covered with cars... It never was a real basketball court. Hollywood saw a parking lot in front of a landmark Venice Beach hotel and liked the setting, so they carted in some hoops and palm trees and created their own streetball set. After the movie, the painted basketball court "keys" were replaced by car keys as the court went back to being just a plain old parking lot. As for the courts we were on, they didn't even exist when the movie was shot. |
